Meeting with Agents One-on-One

Meeting with Agents One-on-One

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU MEET ONE-ON-ONE WITH AN AGENT:

Before the meeting:

  • The agent must get your permission to meet in person and must document the plan options you wish to discuss.
  • The agent cannot come to your home without an appointment.

The agent MAY:

  • Give you plan materials
  • Tell you how to get more plan information
  • Tell you about the plan options you agreed to discuss
  • Give you an enrollment form
  • Collect your completed enrollment form
  • Leave business cards for you to give to friends and family

The agent MAY NOT:

  • Tell you about other plan options you have not agreed to discuss, unless you specifically ask about them (you'll need to complete a separate appointment form to discuss these options)
  • Sell you any products not related to health care, like life insurance
  • Offer you cash (or gifts worth more than $15)
  • Ask for your credit card or banking information
  • Pressure you to join their plan by saying things like, "you have to join this plan or you won't have coverage next year"
  • Ask you to give names and phone numbers or addresses so that the agent can sell to your friends or family
  • Ask you to sign the enrollment form before you are ready to join; you should only sign the form when you are ready to join

After the meeting:

  • The plan will contact you to make sure that you wanted to join and that you understand the plan's coverage and rules.
  • The agent who helped you join the plan can call you to talk about other plan options.

  • When should I start talking to an advisor?

When should I start talking to an advisor?

A good time to reach out to us is 5-6 months before turning 65 so that we can direct you to items that need to be done in preparation, including contacting Social Security, if necessary. The entire process has timelines to keep in mind. Missing one can mean loss of an opportunity or adding significantly to the cost of your coverage.

  • What does an independent agent do?

As an independent agent, we represent numerous insurance companies that provides us access to a broad range of plans that we can sell to meet specific client’s needs. Unlike agents who are employed solely by one insurance company and their plans, we help our clients learn about the ins and outs of Medicare, meet deadlines, and keep them from making costly mistakes. As independent agents, our services are also offered at no cost to our clients. This is possible because our compensation is provided by the insurance companies we represent.

  • What are Medicare Advantage plans?

Medicare Advantage plans, offered by insurance companies, are all inclusive plans required to provide the same Part A and Part B benefits as Medicare with additional benefits at more competitive pricing. These plans also provide a cap on your financial obligation for your out-of-pocket medical costs within a calendar year.

Medicare Advantage plans offer additional benefits for the same or lower cost.

Some commonly offered additional benefits in Medicare Advantage plans include vision care with money toward glasses and contacts, dental services, hearing exams and hearing aids,over-the-counter benefits, and include prescription drug coverage within their plan. In the past,

Medicare Advantage plans required referrals to see specialist but most often that is no longer the case.

Working with The Barfield Alliance will help you to determine whether Medicare Advantage is the best choice for you.

  • Do I need a Medicare Supplement?

You might be wondering if you might need Medicare Supplement insurance. This is an understandable question that many of us have asked. Medicare Supplements are often referred to as Medigap coverage. Medicare Supplements are optional, however, generally worth it, especially if you have current costly health issues. A Medicare Supplement plan fills the 20% gap in your medical coverage left by Original Medicare thereby taking out that sizable risk. And it takes care of things like co-payments and co-insurance. However, there is a timeframe that needs to be met to qualify for a Supplement when you have issues with your health. As you can see. Medicare Supplements can be a confusing topic if you do not understand the ins and outs. That’s why we are here for you. Give us a call today.

The Barfield Alliance is not connected with or endorsed by the United States government or the federal Medicare program.

We are independent brokers, while we represent many carriers, we do not represent them all. In order to see all of the carriers available in your zip code please visit www.medicare.gov or call 1-800-633-4227
